Good Topics For A Physics Research Paper In College

When writing your college level physics research paper, you need to begin with a great topic. It’s the foundation upon which the entire paper is built. Make sure it’s not too broad or you’ll never be able to cover it effectively; too narrow or you won’t find enough research material to support your thesis statement.

It may seem all your fellow students have already chosen the best topics and there’s nothing left for you to pick from. Does the process of topic selection seem nothing less than daunting or confusing? This is a common problem but fortunately physics is a very broad topic that has literally thousands of subtopics to choose from. It’s practically impossible to run out of topics for your research paper.

Physics is basically the study of movement, so think about things that involve movement. Look around you. There are so many! See if one of these ideas can spark your imagination:

Here are some other ideas that might get you started thinking of your own creative, unique topic idea. These are rather broad. You could even take one of them and narrow it down.

  1. The physics of amusement park rides
  2. The life cycle of a star
  3. Applications of Bernoulli’s Principle
  4. The discovery of Avogadro’s number and the implications of it
  5. Specifics of regenerative energy
  6. The physics of the computer hard drive
  7. Physics applications in football
  8. The physics of slingshots
  9. The study of Newton’s laws in rocket science
  10. The physics of human movement in Tae Kwon Do

Now that you have spent some time looking over lists and brainstorming and trying to narrow down a topic, how do you feel on what you’ve decided? If you feel pretty good about moving ahead, you can start the research phase. If you are still unsure, take your notes to your professor and ask for some advice. He or she will ask you questions that will help point you in the right direction. Don’t go to your professor expecting them to hand you a research topic.
