A Quick Guide To APA Referencing Rules For A Research Paper

The APA style is also known as the American Psychological Association style. It is one of the most commonly used citation methods for social sciences. There is a handbook issues by the American Psychological Association that you can use as a reference for your general format, your in-text citations, your footnotes, as well as your reference page.

The APA paper you write should have inside of the beginning what is called a page header, , at the top left hand corner of every page. The page numbers should be inserted at flush right. The title page should contain a shortened version of your title in the page header, which does not go over 50 characters. All characters in your shortened title should be in capitalized format.

All APA papers should contain four major sections including the title page, abstract, body, and references. The title page needs to contain the title of your essay, your name, and your academic institution. It should appear in the center of the page, in the middle of the page. On the title page, the title should contain usual upper and lower case letters. The title can take one-two lines.

The abstract should start on a new page and contain the word “Abstract” in the middle of the page. The next line should not be indented and should contain your research topic, methods, results, analyses, and conclusion information. It is best to have one sentence for each key area of your paper. The abstract should be between 150 and 250 words, based on the requirements of your teacher.

Beneath the abstract, you can include a list of keywords related to your content. If you do, start a new line beneath the abstract and italicize the word “keywords” and after that list all of the relevant keywords in normal font and typeface.

The next page should start your introduction and contain the title of your project once more, centered at the top of the page. Beneath that, all subsequent paragraphs should be intended. When you write a new section (such as the methods or the results) you can place the word “methods” or “results” in bold text in the center of the line, at the start of a new paragraph. You should refer to the APA standards for references and in-text citation styles.
